Ten of the highest rated horror movies with Arkansas ties according to Rotten Tomatoes

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – With Halloween season in full swing, this is the time of year many turn to their favorite horror movies to get into the spirit, several of those films also have ties to the Natural State.

There has been no shortage of talented actors, filmmakers and directors come from Arkansas, countless films have been shot in the state and the Natural State itself has served as the setting for many films.

With so many choices, there are naturally a lot that did not make the list including The Bogman, Sharkansas Women’s Prison Massacre, Ghost of the Ozarks, Manhunter, House of Darkness and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers.

These are ten of the highest rated horror movies with Arkansas ties that are found on film review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.com.

10. The Legend of Boggy Creek – 45%

This legendary film released in 1972 was not only set in Arkansas, but director Charles B. Pierce was raised in Hampton. It is a docudrama that details sightings of the “Fouke Monster”, a creature reportedly seen near Fouke, Arkansas since the 1940s.  

9. I Spit on Your Grave – 51%

In this brutal and controversial 1978 film from director Meir Zarchi, actress Camille Keaton from Pine Bluff plays the lead character Jennifer Hills. She is a fiction writer who exacts revenge on four men that raped her and left her for dead.

8. Pet Sematary – 56%

The 1989 adaptation of Stephen King’s book Pet Sematary was directed by Mary Lambert who was born in Helena, Arkansas. Lambert would also go on to direct other films including Pet Sematary 2 and Urban Legends: Bloody Mary.

7. The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014) – 66%

In this 2014 sequel directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, it continues the story with a local drive-in theater in Texarkana hosting a Halloween showing of the original 1976 film, directed by Charles B. Pierce.

6. 12 Hour Shift – 77%

Set primarily in an Arkansas hospital in 1999, this darkly funny 2020 movie directed by Brea Grant tells the story of a drug-addicted nurse involved in a black-market organ-trading scheme. It also features Angela Bettis, David Arquette and wrestling legend Mick Foley.

5. Halloween (2018) – 79%

When Little Rock native and director David Gordon Green’s 2018 sequel came out, it brought relevancy back to the legendary franchise and also saw the return of lead actress Jamie Lee Curtis. It was a box office success, grossing $259 million and was rated 16 on the Rotten Tomatoes list of the 100 Best Slasher Movies.

4. Creature from the Black Lagoon – 80%

Though the lasting image most have from this 1954 creature feature is the legendary Gill-man, it also features actress Julie Adams. According to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas, Adams was raised in Little Rock and attended Little Rock Junior College, now known as UA Little Rock and was inducted into the Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame.

3. Fright Night – 83%

To many, this 1985 supernatural horror flick about vampires is one of the greatest horror films of all time. It was ranked 193 on the Rotten Tomatoes 200 Best Horror Movies of All Time list. The film, directed by Tom Holland, stars El Dorado native William Ragsdale as 17-year-old Charley Brewster who discovers his next-door neighbor is a vampire and enlists the help of a TV show host to stop his bloody spree.

2. Terrifier 2 – 86%

One of the fastest rising franchises in horror over the last decade has been director Damien Leone’s Terrifier. In the 2022 sequel to the 2016 full length, the main character Art the Clown officially immerged as a modern-day slasher icon. In the film, which was ranked 7 on the 100 Best Slasher Movies list, actress Tamara Glynn from Hot Springs makes a cameo as a mother in a costume shop.

1. A Quiet Place – 96%

Another of the fastest-rising horror franchises in Hollywood was launched in 2018 with the John Krasinski-directed film A Quiet Place. In the movie, Little Rock native Leon Russom appears as a man in the woods who just lost his wife to a death angel. It brought in $341 million in the Box Office and was later ranked 10 on the 200 Best Horror Movies of All Time list and 212 on the Rotten Tomatoes 300 Best Movies of All Time list.
