Weyerhaeuser makes $500 million investment in south Arkansas timber industry, adding 200 jobs

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A giant in the timber industry announced that it is making a significant investment in Arkansas.

Weyerhaeuser Company announced Monday that it is investing $500 million to build a new facility in south Arkansas near Monticello and Warren. Once completed, the facility will process approximately 10 million cubic feet of wood products and provide 200 jobs.

Weyerhaeuser currently employs 700 in Arkansas at its lumber mill in Dierks, a plywood and veneer plant in Emerson, its 1.2 million acres of timberlands, a seedling office and several offices.

Officials said construction of the new facility will begin in 2025 and operations will start in 2027.

The facility will produce the company’s wood laminate TimberStrand engineered wood product (EWP). Once completed, it will match the production capacity of its current TimberStrand facility in Kenora, Ontario, doubling Weyerhaeuser’s capacity.

“This is an exciting opportunity to grow our EWP business, expand TimberStrand into the U.S. South and provide an additional outlet for our fiber logs in Arkansas,” president and chief executive officer Devin W. Stockfish said. “Of the wood products we produce, EWP has the strongest tie to single-family housing construction activity, and this new facility aligns with our conviction that U.S. housing demand will remain favorable over the long term."

Company officials explained that Timberstrand uses southern yellow pine as its primary feedstock, and the company’s Arkansas timber holdings are well suited to supply that wood type.
