LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – For many in the Natural State, this year was marred by unspeakable tragedy and loss. Several times this year, news events in Arkansas made national headlines with some inspiring hope and even joy.

Four killed and several injured in Fordyce mass shooting

On June 21, Travis Eugene Posey began shooting at people in the parking lot of the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce. Shirley Taylor, Callie Weems, Roy Sturgis and Ellen Shrum died during the shooting and Posey pleaded not guilty in court to four counts of capital murder and ten counts of attempted murder.

Clinton National Airport head killed in early morning shootout with ATF agents

On March 19 Clinton National Airport head Bryan Malinowski was shot by ATF agents while they were serving a search warrant at his home shortly after 6 a.m. Malinowski died from his injuries on March 21 and it was later said by the ATF that he was selling guns at gun shows without a dealer’s license, though family attorneys maintain that he was selling the guns legally under a “gunshow loophole” rule allowing for private sellers.

Alma police give update on 29-year-old cold case involving missing girl Morgan Nick

Thanks to a breakthrough in DNA evidence gathering, officials with the Alma Police Department named a suspect in the 29-year-old disappearance of Morgan Nick. On October 1, police officials said that Billy Jack Lincks of Van Buren was named as a suspect in the case after DNA evidence found in a truck he owned at the time of the disappearance was said to belong to Nick. She is still considered missing and police said the investigation continues.

Netflix series ‘Unlocked: A Jail Experiment’ showcases experiment in Arkansas jail

In March, Netflix announced a new series called “Unlocked: A Jail Experiment”, that explores what happens when inmates in the Pulaski County Regional Detention Facility are given more independence rather than being kept under lock and key. Residents in central Arkansas and even the county judge and other officials were shocked at the announcement of the series, but one inmate featured said that it changed his mentality for the better.

Alabama man wanted for multiple killings seen in Morrilton, prompting police search

On June 19, police in Morrilton said they were searching for Stacy Lee Drake, an Alabama man wanted in connection to multiple killings in Oklahoma. Drake was taken into custody the next day thanks to collaboration from various law enforcement agencies.

Tourists flock to the Natural State for a chance to view rare total solar eclipse

On April 8, a total solar eclipse crossed over the Natural State, bringing with it hundreds of thousands of visitors to the state for the celestial celebration. Cities statewide had celebrations ranging from music festivals and Star Wars-themed parties to hundreds getting married during the eclipse in Russellville.

Though there’s no telling what the new year will bring, many in the Natural State are hoping for peace, prosperity and plenty of victories for the Hogs.
