Woman's home that doubles as animal sanctuary catches on fire
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Torvi Winters has been rescuing and rehabbing animals for 20 years and just started her nonprofit Wildlife Matters one year ago.
On Friday, the same place her family and these animals call home went up in flames.
"My 18-year-old, I had missed a call from him. And I got a voice mail saying the kitchen is on fire help," Winters said.
At the time Winters was rehabbing a raccoon, possum, rabbits, bats and more. She also owns 7 pet birds.
"All the wildlife is kept in the garage, and thankfully it has a fire wall," Winters said.
Thankfully her family was safe and so are all the animals. But while her home was engulfed in smoke, she had to act quickly to get the wildlife in a different place with proper care.
"Before all the fire trucks were gone, I had other rehabbers coming to pick stuff up and people coming to help with smaller cages," Winters said.
Now those animals are finishing out their rehab in new homes and Winters' birds are still gray from the smoke that stained their feathers.
