Arkansas winter utility bill assistance program begins Monday

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A federal program providing money to help with household utility bills went into effect Monday.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides up to $475 to help with energy costs. The program will continue operating until its $41 million in funding is depleted or the end of March.

Officials with Entergy said the program targets vulnerable households, including older adults, individuals with disabilities and families with young children, especially those on a fixed monthly income.

Eligibility in Arkansas is determined by household size and income, which is 60% of the state median income and 150% of the Federal Poverty Level. For example, a single individual with a maximum monthly countable income of $2,054 and a family of four with $3,949 would be eligible.

The Arkansas Department of Energy & Environment (ADEE) manages LIHEAP, but applications for assistance must be made to community-based organizations listed on the ADEE's website.

According to Entergy officials, the most recent data from the National Energy and Utility Affordability Coalition indicates that while more than 327,000 households were eligible for LIHEAP funds, only 66,407 received the funding because the $41 million was exhausted. In Arkansas, 75% of those who did receive LIHEAP assistance had at least one vulnerable member: an older adult, disabled individual or a child younger than 6 years old.
