LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – An Arkansas-born fallen veteran is being honored by a NASCAR race team on Memorial Day during a premier race.

Little Rock-born Staff Sgt. Alan Shaw is being honored by Cup Series driver Chase Briscoe for Joe Gibbs Racing. Shaw died on Feb. 7, 2007, from an explosion during a breaching operation in Baqubah, Iraq.

Shaw’s name and rank will be displayed on the number 19 Briscoe-driven Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing.

A release from Gibbs Racing stated the explosion that killed Shaw came from a booby-trap inside a building he was checking. He served in the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team and 1st Cavalry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas.

Shaw, who was awarded a Bronze Star, was nicknamed “Superman” by his fellow soldiers on tour. At the time of his death, he was on his second combat tour in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was survived by a son, 10-year-old Austin, and daughters Jourdan, 7, and Davyn, 6.

He had previously served in the U.S. Marines for two overseas and one sea tour. Less than one year after discharge, he enlisted in the Army.

The weekend race is the Coca-Cola 600, the longest race on the NASCAR schedule. It is held on the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. It is known as a challenging race for drivers and crew chiefs, as its 6 p.m. start means track conditions change as sunlight gives way to darkness and temperature changes.
