Armed robbery suspect dies after police pursuit, crash in Van Buren County

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Ark. – Arkansas State Police said a man is dead after a high-speed pursuit in Van Buren County on Wednesday.

State police said 23-year-old Joey Vincent Simmons II of Memphis died from his injuries around 7:45 a.m.

According to ASP officials, Simmons was wanted in connection with a string of robberies at convenience stores in Conway and Damascus.

Troopers said they located the suspect vehicle traveling northbound on US Highway 65 south of Bee Branch.

When the pursuit began, ASP officials said Simmons began driving at speeds above 100 miles per hour before driving into oncoming traffic.

During the chase, authorities said Simmons began firing a gun at the pursuing trooper before he lost control of his car and drove into a wooded area. Police said Simmons was ejected from his car.

Authorities said the county coroner pronounced Simmons dead at the scene.

ASP officials added that no troopers were injured in the pursuit and no law enforcement officers fired a weapon.
