VIDEO: Fireball streaks across sky in South Carolina
(WJBF) – Residents in parts of South Carolina and Georgia reported seeing a fireball streak across the sky in broad daylight on Thursday.
Nexstar's WJBF received numerous calls and messages regarding the odd sighting.
The fireball can be seen in the video above, which was captured on a Tesla dashcam by Bryan Jennings Updyke. Toward the end of the video, a fiery streak appears on the right side of the screen. A similar sight can be seen on this video obtained by Nexstar's WJZY.
The National Weather Service office in Charleston, South Carolina, suggested it may have been a meteorite. Technology typically used to detect lightning picked up on a flash of light late Thursday morning over the Virginia and North Carolina border.
The fireball was seen between 11:51 a.m. and 11:56 a.m. ET, WJZY reported.
According to NOAA, the Geostationary Lightning Mapper on its satellites "can occasionally detect these bright meteors (aka bolides) when they pass through the atmosphere."
Bolides are meteors bright enough for us to see during the day, NASA explains. They're a regular occurrence, with 20 already detected this year across the globe using U.S. government sensors.
The Bootid Meteor shower, meanwhile, is active and expected to peak on Friday.
