Travs Roundup: New stars Montes, Arroyo shine brightly in series win over RoughRiders

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Arkansas Travelers have been on fire to start the second half of the 2025 Texas League season, and this weekend they stayed hot, beating the Frisco RoughRiders on Sunday to win their second consecutive series.

Following their recent trip to Amarillo in which Lazaro Montes and Michael Arroyo made their debut in Double-A, the Travs took on the RoughRiders in a split series with 3 games in Frisco, and 3 back home at CHI St. Vincent Field at Dickey-Stephens Park.

Arkansas started the series with a tense 6-5 win over the RoughRiders in which Hunter Fitz-Gerald got a single in the top of the 10th inning to drive home two runs. Frisco scored a run in the bottom of the 10th before Taylor Floyd slammed the door shut for the win.

On Wednesday the game was also decided by a single run, but this time in Frisco’s favor with a 7-6 victory despite Lazaro Montes getting 3 hits and scoring 2 runs. Arkansas countered to win the road half of the series after scoring 7 runs in the first 3 innings and holding on for an 8-5 victory on Thursday.

The series then shifted to North Little Rock where Montes made his DSP debut Friday in front of a packed crowd that celebrated the Fourth of July with the boom of fireworks and the awe of a 2-0 shutout. The RoughRiders would take the Saturday night contest 6-1, but the Arkansas bats came out firing early on Sunday thanks to a leadoff double from Arroyo in his DSP debut; the Travs jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning and secured the 5-1 win.

Sunday’s win put the Travs one game up on the Wichita Wind Surge in the Texas League standings, but Wichita moved back into a first-place tie with the Travs following a wild 15-13 win over the Tulsa Drillers Sunday night.

When the home half of the series began, the Travelers were wearing brand new baby blue hats to celebrate the Fourth of July and the Travelers Crossing team store also unveiled a new line of shirts. The week’s homestand also included a new item in the concession stand which proves that even nachos taste better in a helmet.

During Sunday’s game, the team gave away a set of team cards courtesy of Gameday Sports Cards Little Rock. The set includes the team’s first half roster consisting of players like former Hogs Matt Cronin and Caleb Cali, current Seattle Mariners reliever Juan Burgos, and Triple-A callups bound for Seattle like Victor Labrada and Brandyn Garcia.

The Travelers will stay at home for another week to take on the Drillers, which features a pitching staff that includes fireballer Jackson Ferris and three of the top 30 pitchers in the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system.

Arkansas will be celebrating Fiesta de Diamantes over the weekend with fireworks on Friday, a former WWE luchador on Saturday and a Diamantes sugar skull bobblehead giveaway on Sunday. For more information about the Arkansas Travelers or how to buy tickets, visit Travs.com.
