Big wins at 8th Annual Great Southern Stone Skipping Championships

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, ARK. – It’s probably one of the oldest sports in the history of the world, and maybe you’ve heard of it yourself, skipping rocks across the water.

The 8th Annual Great Southern Stone Skipping Championships returned on Saturday to North Little Rock.

Lakewood Lake Number One has hosted the contest for the past several years.

Volunteer military veterans took on the task of counting the skips.

A bit of wind added to the challenge, as men, women and children under 12 competed for a cool trophy – along with a cash prize.

"I got lucky, you know, the wind calmed down right when I was going up, and I saw my opportunity,” four-time men’s champion Jon Jennings of Louisville said. ”Picked the best stone I had and threw it, and luckily I was able to come out on top."

Ashlie Hueter of Mountain Home won the women’s division with 11 skips.
