Arkansas Travelers alum Cal Raleigh breaks Seattle Mariners season home run record
HOUSTON – Seattle Mariners catcher Cal “Big Dumper” Raleigh continued his historic season by hitting his 57th home run of the year against the Houston Astros.
With his 399-foot bomb to right center on Saturday night, Raleigh now holds the franchise record for home runs in a season, passing Ken Griffey Jr.
On Wednesday he broke Mickey Mantle’s record for home runs in a season by a switch-hitter and one inning later he hit number 56, a mark Griffey reached in 1997 and ’98.
Since hitting his first of the season on March 31, Raleigh has won the Home Run Derby, started in the All-Star Game and became the first primary catcher in MLB history to hit 50 home runs in a season.
The historic dinger comes as the Mariners are battling the Astros for the American League West crown in a playoff race that sees the two separated by a single game for the lead.
Other former Arkansas Travelers appearing for the Mariners on Saturday include outfielder Julio Rodriguez and starting pitcher George Kirby.
