Arkansas launches ‘Extreme Safety’ campaign for pedestrians, cyclists

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Officials with the Arkansas State Police Highway Safety Office announced the launch of the “Extreme Safety” campaign to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety across Arkansas roadways from Oct. 6 to 18.

The campaign coincides with National Pedestrian Safety Month and will provide safety guidance for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, officials said.

Recent data show pedestrian fatalities in Arkansas reached a 10-year high in 2020 with 81 deaths, and 2023 saw 74 fatalities, with 70% occurring in urban areas and 78% between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., officials said.

“Many of us fail to realize that pedestrians and cyclists are often at higher risk on our roadways,” Arkansas Public Safety Secretary Colonel Mike Hagar said, urging all Arkansans to stay alert and follow road safety guidelines.

According to a spokesperson, the campaign will emphasize key safety practices, including avoiding distractions and following speed limits for drivers, helmet use and brake checks for cyclists, and crossing at designated areas while staying vigilant for pedestrians.
