Story Summary
Detective Sergeant Bruce Robertson (James McAvoy) is a corrupt, drug‑addicted cop in Glasgow whose mind is a battlefield of paranoia, hallucinations and self‑delusion. As he schemes to climb the police hierarchy, he manipulates colleagues, assaults a vulnerable woman, and battles his own inner demons, all while the line between reality and his twisted imagination blurs into a grotesque, darkly comic nightmare.
Review
Filth delivers a visceral, unapologetically raw portrait of a deeply flawed anti‑hero. McAvoy’s ferocious performance anchors a film that oscillates between black comedy and stark drama, using hallucinatory sequences to externalise the protagonist’s fractured psyche. While the narrative’s relentless bleakness can be off‑putting, the film’s daring stylistic choices and sharp social commentary on police corruption make it a compelling, if unsettling, entry in the modern crime‑drama canon.
