Story Summary
In 1970s suburban New York, a widowed mother named Carla Moran (Barbara Hershey) endures a series of violent, unseen assaults in her home. While her psychiatrist, Dr. Sneider, attributes the episodes to repressed childhood abuse, Carla becomes convinced that a malevolent, invisible entity is physically assaulting her. As the attacks intensify, she records the phenomena, seeks help from a skeptical police detective, and ultimately confronts the dark force that seems determined to break her spirit.
Review
The Entity delivers a chilling blend of psychological dread and supernatural horror, anchored by Barbara Hershey's raw, unsettling performance. Sidney J. Furie's direction balances claustrophobic domestic settings with unsettling, unseen menace, creating tension that lingers long after the credits roll. While the film's special effects feel dated by modern standards, its willingness to explore themes of trauma, victimhood, and the unseen forces that can haunt a mind makes it a standout entry in early 80s horror. Critics praised its atmospheric tension but noted the pacing drags in the middle act. Overall, it remains a compelling, if unsettling, study of a woman's fight against an invisible predator.
