Sen. Ted Cruz honors former KARK 4 News anchor, CNN political commentator Alice Stewart on Senate floor

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former KARK 4 News weekend anchor and national political commentator Alice Stewart was honored on the floor of the U.S. Senate on Wednesday after her May death.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) spoke about Stewart’s career in news and politics, including their first meeting when she was the communications director for his 2016 presidential campaign, the beginning of their friendship.

“She never lost her Southern charm, her class or her respect for others,” Cruz said. “She was one of the last old-school political operators who believed you could get along with anyone, regardless of political differences.”

Cruz also spoke to Stewart’s professionalism.

“She navigated disagreements with kindness, whether it was at CNN or in her role as a political contributor on NPR,” he said.

The senator also reflected on Stewart being both a runner and a woman of faith.

“As a runner, it was also fitting that Alice loved Hebrews 12, especially the verse ‘Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfector of faith,’” Cruz said. “Alice showed what it means to run the race well.”

Finally, Cruz summarized the passing of his “good friend.”

“May God bless the memory of Alice Stewart. She will be missed, and I will miss her,” he said.

Stewart died unexpectedly on May 18 at her home in Virginia. She worked at KARK 4 News before working for then-Gov. Mike Huckabee and entering national politics.
