Entergy Arkansas offers tips to save money while staying warm this winter
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Entergy Arkansas offers tips to keep costs down as Arkansans prepare for winter’s cold embrace.
Officials with the utility said La Nina is expected to produce a warmer and dryer winter. They continued that despite this, Arkansas weather can be unpredictable, and it is a good idea to prepared for possible weather extremes.
Officials break down efficiency into three parts: Making the home efficient, making the area around the home efficient and efficiently managing energy use.
Home efficiency comes from preparation and following a few simple steps. Homeowners should use solar energy by opening the curtains on south-facing windows during the day to allow sunlight into the home. Close the curtains at night to reduce heat loss.
Insulating drafty windows is another home energy-saving tip, up to and including putting a heavy-duty clear plastic sheet sealed tightly over the window frame. In the evening, adjusting the thermostat down can lead to savings of as much as 10%, officials said.
Going around the house to find and seal leaks will also increase efficiency, as will keeping the home heating system up-to-date and in tune, including changing filters.
Finally, reducing heat loss from the fireplace can save homeowners utility costs by keeping the damper closed when a fire is not burning and ensuring the dampener is well sealed.
Around the house, it is a good idea to manage vegetation by maintaining trees to lower the risk of downed branches breaking power lines.
Finally, track energy use using tools such as Entergy’s myAdvisor to track use throughout the day. Officials also said the company has programs for helping with energy bills, with information on them through its mobile app or myEntergy online dashboard.
