Proposed bill would form a joint military and veterans affairs committee in the Arkansas legislature
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A bill submitted in the Arkansas legislature would lead to the formation of a joint military and veterans affairs committee.
HB 1056 would form a 12-member committee of House and Senate members to “make continuing studies concerning issues related to military and veterans affairs, either initiated by the Joint Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs or referred to it by either house of the General Assembly for study,” the legislation states.
Rep. Brian Evans (R-Cabot) and Sen. Bart Hester (R-Cave Springs) are the bill’s sponsors.
The Department of Defense shows that Arkansas has 4,819 active-duty service members, 1,844 active-duty spouses and 3,619 active-duty children within its borders. In addition, the Natural State has 13,558 National Guard and Reserve members, 6,116 National Guard and Reserve spouses and 9,745 National Guard and Reserve children.
According to Arkansas House of Representatives research, the state has 220,000 veterans, about 10% of its adult population.
Arkansas has five military installations: The Little Rock Air Force Base, the Pine Bluff Arsenal, Camp Robinson (Camp Pike) in North Little Rock, Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Fort Smith and the Fort Chaffee Joint Maneuver Training Center, also in Fort Smith.
