Arkansas Storm Team Weather Blog: Todd’s holiday gift ideas for the weather geek in your life
It’s hard finding the perfect gift for that special someone, especially if they’re infatuated with the weather like me. You can’t just go to the store and buy a weather gift most of the time. I have found the best gifts are found online and with a little research, you can find that special gift.
Of course, I’m going to tell you the best gift is a snow machine. There are downfalls with that though. They are quite expensive and living this far south limits the days snowmaking is possible. You only get a few opportunities with temperatures colder than 28 degrees. A good snow machine will need a special air compressor and pressure washer to make it work correctly.
How about a personal weather station that measures the temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind gusts, barometric pressure, rain amounts, etc? Most of them can upload the data instantaneously to an app on your smartphone. I highly recommend this.
Some even detect lightning and will alert you when strikes are detected within a certain range of your house. I also recommend finding one that is solar-powered so you are not always changing the batteries.
A very affordable gift is a NOAA weather radio. Everybody should have one of these. Most modern radios will only sound an alert when you are within a warning polygon. If you’re in one end of the county and the storm only affects the other end, it will not bother you.
Remember to change the backup battery a couple of times a year. Some even have add-ons to help alert the hearing and visually impaired.
There are also several sites online that have weather gear like t-shirts, sweatshirts, socks, shoes, and anything else you can imagine.
Good luck on finding that gift and have a very Merry Christmas!
