Arkansas Department of Health shows flu continues at high levels, four additional deaths in weekly report
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Flu activity in Arkansas remains stable but high-ranking despite four additional deaths in the most recent Arkansas Department of Health report.
The week ending Jan. 11 report ranks flu activity at nine on the 13-point scale, a High ranking. This is slightly lower than 10 on the 13-point scale, also High, in the previous week’s report.
So far, during the 2024-2025 flu season, Arkansas only reached a Very High 11-point ranking for the week of Dec. 28.
The Jan. 11 report showed four patient deaths due to flu for the week. This makes for 11 flu-related deaths since the season’s Sept. 30, 2024 beginning, the report stated, with 82% of those patients being unvaccinated and eight over 65 years old.
The report also showed 86 patient deaths due to pneumonia for the week and seven COVID-19-related deaths. ADH officials said COVID-19 has claimed 517 people in 2024 and seven since Jan. 1.
Nine flu outbreaks have been reported for the week from nursing homes or other congregate settings.
Officials point out that the deaths reflect the week reported, not the date of death. They added that the numbers reported only indicate a fraction of those affected since flu is only reported in the event of hospitalization, death or outbreaks.
