Three Arkansas congressmen representing Jefferson County introduce legislation to avoid budget defaults

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Three Arkansas congress members from Pine Bluff introduced legislation to prevent future situations like the current Jefferson County budget crisis.
House Bill 1331 would require any county that does not appropriate a new budget ordinance for the year to continue to operate under the previous year’s budget. The legislation includes an emergency clause, so it would go into effect immediately after becoming law.
Jefferson County has not had a budget since Jan. 1 due to an ongoing disagreement between quorum court justices and county Judge Gerald Robinson. The lack of budget means employees are not being paid, and the county is incurring arrears in its vendor accounts.
HB1331 is sponsored by Rep. Glenn Barnes (D), and cosponsorship is given by Rep. Kenneth B. Ferguson (D) and Rep. Mike Holcomb (R), all of Pine Bluff.
