On this week’s episode of the Under the Shell Podcast, hosts Brendan Weissel, Sam Jane and Michael Howes are joined by Maryland wrestling head coach Alex Clemsen.
In his sixth season with the Terps, Maryland holds an 8-6 record with a 3-1 showing in Big Ten play. The Terps defeated No. 10 Michigan on Jan. 10 — marking their first top-10 win since 2009. It was the first time Maryland defeated a top-10 opponent as an unranked team since 2007.
Clemsen discussed the Terps’ hot start to conference play and previewed the upcoming dual meet against No. 2 Iowa. He also talked about the future of nonrevenue collegiate sports in the era of NIL and revenue sharing.
“If broad-based sports offerings go away at the collegiate level, I don’t think that’s good for America,” Clemsen said. “Athletics for human beings are good. Being on a team, learning to work together is good. Challenging yourself physically, mentally, emotionally is good. The fewer athletic opportunities there are, the fewer times that happens — and that’s not good for our society.”
The hosts also recapped Maryland men’s basketball’s 76-68 victory over No. 17 Wisconsin and the recent stretch for Maryland women’s basketball.
