PINE BLUFF, Ark. – An interim chief of police was sworn in on Tuesday morning after police chief Denise Richardson was relieved of duty on Monday afternoon.
According to Pine Bluff public information officer Lt. David DeFoor, Deputy Chief Shirley Warrior will now step into the position until a permanent replacement is selected.
According to a letter on Monday, Richardson was relieved of duty by Pine Bluff Mayor Vivian Flowers.
“This decision is made without cause and is not a reflection of your job performance but rather my decision to go in a different direction with the Pine Bluff Police Department,” Flowers wrote.
On Tuesday, the Pine Bluff Fraternal order of Police released a statement saying that they believe the termination is an error.
According to a statement signed by Sargeant Shanee Jackson, which acknowledges their ongoing respect for Mayor Flowers, but adds, “…we respectfully but firmly disagree with her decision to terminate Chief of Police Denise Richardson, who was appointed on July 20, 2022, and served until her dismissal on March 24, 2025.”
The statement gives a listing of Richardson’s accomplishments and goes on to say that the FOP will continue to “advocate for integrity, transparency, and progress within our department.”
