LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – In an effort to combat homelessness in central Arkansas, local nonprofit The Van announced Friday its plans for a new emergency shelter.

According to a post on social media, the group has raised over $256,000 for the building and put 10 unrestricted acres outside city limits under contract for the construction of the new facility.

“We put 10 unrestricted acres outside city limits under contract today for the construction of a 15k sq ft permanent winter weather emergency shelter and year-round thrift store / farm stand,” the post said.

In a GoFundMe post, the organization says that an opportunity has come up to get a 4 to 1 donation match to help with construction.

“If we can raise $4,200, the donor will match up to $16,400, meaning The Van would receive $20,600.00,” the fundraiser said.

In Dec. The Van executive director Aaron Reddin said that the nonprofit raised more than $125,000 and that it was under contract for an 8,000 to 10,000-square-foot building that would be used as an inclement weather emergency shelter and a year-round thrift store.

However, in January when he went to officially purchase the property, which is located on Arch Street, there was a major problem. Reddin said that they identified the building and put it under contract with the person that they thought was the building owner, but it was not.
