Lonoke County pursuit leaves deputy, K9 and others injured
LONOKE COUNTY, Ark. – A Tuesday pursuit in Lonoke County ended in a crash that left a deputy, a K9 and others injured.
According to investigators, the pursuit started in Jacksonville and then Lonoke County Sheriff’s deputies joined the pursuit on Highway 31 after crossing into the county.
Investigators said the person being pursued, 18-year-old Jashaun Coffey of Jacksonville, struck a truck and trailer on Highway 31 at Covington Road. The impact of that crash caused the truck and trailer to be thrown into the path of a K9 unit, which resulted in the injury of a deputy and his K9 partner.
Deputies said Coffey was transported by Med Flight to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the truck and the deputy were both taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, and the K9 was taken to a veterinarian for evaluation.
Detectives said they spoke to the owner of the vehicle Coffey was driving, with it being confirmed that he didn’t have permission to take or operate the vehicle.
Coffey is now facing multiple charges that include second-degree battery, aggravated assault, reckless driving, injuring animals used by law enforcement and theft by receiving. He also had a warrant from the Fordyce Police Department for a failure to appear.
