Cabot bicycle motocross track offering a free event Saturday

CABOT, Ark. – Families looking for a summer sport will have a chance to explore BMX racing at a track in Cabot this Saturday.

The National Registration Week event will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. on Saturday at Cabot BMX, located at 2351 Willie Ray Drive, Cabot. First-timers will be able to borrow a BMX bike and a helmet to give BMX racing a try at this free registration event.

The event is sanctioned by USA BMX, the national sanctioning body for the sport.

BMX racing had its start in the early 1970s, and kids on bikes with 20-inch wheels would imitate their motorcycle-riding motocross heroes. Races are conducted on a single-lap, closed-course track akin to a motocross track, with riders divided into classes based on age and experience.

More than 300 BMX tracks exist in the country, including two in central Arkansas, and the national sanction supports local, regional and national race series.
