Memorial held for 15-year-old Saline County girl who died in dog attack
ALEXANDER, ARKANSAS.- It's been a difficult few weeks for people who knew and loved 15-year-old Makayla Fortner before her death.
Her mother, Stephanie Wilkie, says the community has shown up endlessly for her and her family, and on Saturday, they packed Bryant Soccer Field for Makayla's memorial service.
"She didn't die in vain, and she will always be remembered", Wilkie said.
The memorial joined everyone who loved, cared for, and cherished who Makayla was.
Her classmates Kyleigh Talley and Ava Scardine both made it a priority to show up.
"She was a super sweet girl," Talley said.
"She was super smart, and she would always help me with my work, and we would talk to each other," Scardine said.
Makayla's light shone in the Bryant Middle School classrooms, in the band, on the soccer field, and on the volleyball court.
Her daily hobbies didn't take away from her love for dogs. "She loved the animals she loved to foster, that was one of the things we did together for many years, she just loved to give back," Wilkie said.
In June, Makayla passed away after being attacked by dogs. Her mother says her daughter had a heart of gold and was selfless. Her friends used her memorial as a time to reflect.
"Just keep your loved ones close because you never know," Scardine said.
"She was really smart, and she was just the sweetest girl," Talley said.
Sabrina Stout, Makayla's godmother, says she's determined to keep her legacy alive and hopes that the tragedy will push legislators to make a change.
"We can't bring her back, but we can hopefully pass some legislation to help those outlying that truly have no plan or support for what to do," Stout said.
