National Weather Service Little Rock cutting back on services amid staffing changes
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Officials said the volume of information from the National Weather Service in Little Rock will decrease in the coming week.
The NWS announced on Friday that it would be shutting down some services beginning Sunday, July 13. The adjustments will be temporary, officials said, as the NWS “is actively identifying and implementing near-term and long-term solutions as we adjust services amid the current staffing changes.”
Public outreach is stopping during this time, officials said, as SKYWARN classes are discontinued. SKYWARN is a class to train weather watchers.
Hazardous Weather Outlook (HWO) and Agricultural Observations (AGO) are being eliminated permanently, officials said.
Climate data processing is being reduced to “only the midnight run,” per the official announcement, with the afternoon intermediate run continuing as an automated product.
Graphicast will only be produced for significant weather events.
Area Forecast Discussion will now be issued once a day at 1 a.m. Aviation discussions will be issued with each Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (TAF).
The NWS is changing the times of its upper-air balloon launches from 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. and 7 p.m.
