Man sentenced to life for murder of Perry County detention deputy

PERRYVILLE, Ark. — A former co-worker of slain Perry County Detention Deputy Jeremiah Story says he's still heartbroken, three years after Story was shot and killed. The man convicted of the murder, 39-year-old Roderick Lewis, was sentenced to life in prison Friday, Aug. 8.

Story was 21 when he was shot by an inmate he was monitoring on June 22, 2022.

"Every year, the family, we get together, and we celebrate his life. If it's not only the 22nd of June, it's close to it," said Tachany Evans, Story's former work partner.

Evans described Story as an "old soul."

"He was always joking about things. He loved everyone,” she said. “He would bring the inmates candy for Halloween.”

Evans said the memories will last forever, but the pain of losing him will too. She said putting the man responsible behind bars doesn't erase the hurt.

"I know that Jeremiah would have forgiven him for what he did. That's just how good that boy was," she said.

Lewis also received an additional 15 years for a firearms enhancement. Prosecutors waived the death penalty.
