FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Arkansas State Police have identified the man accused of exchanging gunfire with Fayetteville police officers on Sunday.
ASP said in a news release that its Criminal Investigation (CID) was asked to investigate a shooting involving FPD at The Cliffs Apartment Complex on North Garnet Court in Fayetteville.
FPD responded to the complex around noon on Sunday in reference to a gunshot. While trying to contact those inside the complex, gunshots were fired from inside one of the apartments towards officers, according to the release.
The man, identified as Brandon Poulter, 42, of Fayetteville, continued to fire shots at officers and also targeted an armored vehicle.
Officers returned fire at Poulter, striking him. FPD entered the apartment and found him deceased.
Poulter's body will be taken to the Arkansas State Crime Lab to determine the cause and manner of death, the release said.
Fayetteville police will conduct an internal investigation regarding departmental procedures and policies.
ASP said special agents will investigate the shooting and present their findings to the Washington County Prosecutor's Office, which will decide if the use of lethal force was consistent with state law.
