Taulia Tagovailoa becomes all-time Big Ten passing yards leader
The Terps’ four-year starter etched his name into the history books Saturday.
Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa made history Saturday, surpassing Curtis Painter’s Big Ten record of 11,163 career passing yards to become the league’s all-time leader.
Entering Saturday’s game against Rutgers, Tagovailoa needed 269 yards to eclipse Painter’s record. He did so with 1:16 left in the second quarter on an 6-yard completion to Jeshaun Jones.
The four-year starter will finish his career in College Park holding a plethora of records. He is Maryland’s single-season and all-time leader in both completions and passing yards, also garnering a share of the single-season touchdowns record. This season, Tagovailoa leads the Big Ten in passing yards, passing yards per game, passing touchdowns and completions.
The redshirt senior transferred from Alabama to Maryland ahead of the 2020 season. In the five years before he arrived, Maryland failed to have a winning season. As the starting quarterback, Tagovailoa has led the Terps to three straight bowl games — the first time the program has made three consecutive bowl appearances since 2006-08.
