Arkansas flu activity continues to rank high, deaths continue, for week of Jan. 27

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Flu activity continues to occur at a high rate, according to the weekly report for Jan. 27 from the Arkansas Department of Health.

The state had five people die due to flu for the week, according to the report. The report continued that since the Oct. 1, 2023, start of flu season, 29 Arkansans have died due to influenza, 17 of whom were over 65 years old.

Arkansas continues to be ranked high for flu activity, according to the weekly report. The state ranks 10 on the 13-point national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention scale. The sole week with a very high rank of 11 was the last week of 2023, according to ADH reporting.

Flu outbreaks in nursing homes or other congregational settings reached 12 since Oct. 1. This is an increase of three since the prior week's report.

The report for the week of Jan. 27 also showed 31 COVID-19 deaths in the state, on top of 699 deaths in 2023 and 66 since Jan. 1. The report noted that the weekly death rate reflects when deaths were reported, not when they occurred.

ADH also reported 64 pneumonia deaths for the week.

Nationally, CDC estimates that there have been at least 18 million illnesses, 210,000 hospitalizations, and 13,000 deaths from flu so far this season.
