LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Plans have been set for a detachment of Arkansas National Guard troops to deploy to the southern border.
Officials said a departure ceremony for the 40 Guardsmen from the 142nd Field Artillery Brigade will take place at 9 a.m. April 1 at the Fort Chaffee Joint Maneuver Training Center in Barling, Arkansas.
The deployment is being made in response to Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders' order on March 19 that Arkansas Guardsmen be sent to the border to aid the Texas National Guard in Operation Lonestar. Officials said that while deployed, the Guardsmen will remain under Sanders's control but will perform ground duties on behalf of the Texas National Guard.
The Guardsmen reported to Fort Chaffee on March 28 to begin processing, training and screening with a planned return date of May 30.
This is the second deployment of Arkansas Guardsmen in support of Operation Lonestar by the Sanders administration, this first taking place when 80 were deployed from June 24 to Aug. 5. In 2021 then-Gov. Asa Hutchinson deployed 13 Guardsmen to support Operation Lonestar.
In 2022 and 2023 the 875th Engineer Battalion of Jonesboro deployed 50 members to Texas for one year to support U.S. Customs and Border Patrol by performing lookout and observation duties.
