NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Authorities in North Little Rock said Monday that they made an arrest in a weekend shooting in which a police officer was injured.
North Little Rock Police Department officials said 16-year-old Antwonie Sanders was arrested and will be charged as an adult in connection with the shooting.
NLRPD officials said officers responded to the 2300 block of Highway 161 around 2:30 p.m. Sunday in reference to what police described as a group of suspicious juveniles. They noted that officers were told one of the juveniles was armed with a handgun.
The officials said one officer arrived in the area and talked to two of the juveniles, discovering that one of them, identified as Sanders, had a gun.
Authorities said the officer attempted to disarm Sanders, leading to a struggle, during which the officer was shot in the upper thigh. Additional officers then arrived on the scene.
According to police, Sanders tried running from the scene with the gun while another officer shot at him before the teen was taken into custody moments later without injuries.
NLRPD officials said the injured officer was taken to a local hospital and has since been released. The officer who fired his service weapon has been placed on administrative leave.
Sanders is being held without bond at the Pulaski County Regional Detention Facility and is facing multiple charges, including one count of first-degree battery, one count of fleeing and one count of resisting arrest.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the North Little Rock Police Department Tip Line at 501-680-8439 or detectives at 501-771-7155.
