Maryland men’s basketball lands South Florida transfer Selton Miguel
Miguel is Maryland’s third transfer commitment this offseason.
Maryland men’s basketball continued its busy offseason Tuesday when it earned a commitment from South Florida transfer Selton Miguel, who announced his decision on X.
Miguel is Maryland’s third incoming transfer this cycle, joining fellow transfers Rodney Rice and Ja’Kobi Gillespie. The move leaves head coach Kevin Willard with two remaining scholarship spots for next year.
Listed at 6-foot-4, Miguel is ranked as a four-star prospect and the No. 32 small forward by per 247Sports’ transfer rankings. A native of Angola, he played two years at Kansas State prior to spending the last two at USF.
A cousin of former Maryland star Bruno Fernando — also from Angola — Miguel broke out this past season, named both AAC Sixth Man of the Year and the league’s most improved player.
He set a career-high with 14.7 points per game on 39% shooting from three and was also second on the team in both assists (71) and steals (38), helping the Bulls to a 25-8 record and a second-round appearance in the NIT. With one year of eligibility left, Miguel earlier this month declared for the NBA draft while also entering his name into the transfer portal.
During Miguel’s 2022-23 campaign, he averaged 10.3 points per game while playing about three fewer minutes per game than this past season. At Kansas State, despite shooting just over 20% from three, he averaged 7.2 points per game across 55 appearances.
With Miguel’s commitment, next year’s roster is quickly coming into shape. While moves are still to be made, Gillespie, Miguel and DeShawn Harris-Smith look likely to take up a bulk of backcourt minutes.
