Nonprofit builds home for injured veteran in Pea Ridge

PEA RIDGE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A national nonprofit was in Pea Ridge this weekend helping build a new home for a local veteran who was injured during his service in Iraq.

Homes For Our Troops helps post-9/11 veterans rebuild their lives by building them custom-made homes.

The organization held a volunteer landscaping day for Army Sergeant Andy Butterworth's new home in Pea Ridge.

Sergeant Butterworth was deployed to Iraq in 2004 and served 10 months before getting injured and losing his right leg above the knee. His new home will feature lower countertops and roll-under sinks, which he said is more accommodating than previous homes he's lived in.

"My wife's missing her left leg at the knee, so this will open up so many more opportunities for us. A good, comfortable home life is always nice," Butterworth said. "I don't have to turn sideways to get into my bathroom anymore or, you know, take little steps around the kids. It'll be nice."

Sergeant Butterworth said it's hard to put into words the support he's felt from the people in the community but said Northwest Arkansas feels like home.
