Little Rock Zoo removes straw lodged in penguin’s esophagus

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Staff at the Little Rock Zoo said one of their penguins has gained its appetite back after a straw was removed from its esophagus.

Zoo staff said they had noticed that one of the penguins had a decreased appetite, and after a couple of radiographs it was confirmed that there was a straw-like structure in its esophagus.

The vet staff performed a procedure to remove the silicone straw that was keeping the penguin from eating. Zoo officials said the penguin is now “eating like a champ.”

Zoo officials also remined guests that they are not allowed to place or throw objects into the animal habitats.

Anyone who sees foreign objects in any animal habitats are asked to inform a zoo staff member to avoid any incidents.
