Little Rock Zoo announces the birth of a baby dik-dik

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Officials with the Little Rock Zoo announced a new addition to its family on Saturday.

In a post on social media, the zoo is celebrating the birth of a baby Kirk’s dik-dik that was born to proud parents Abeba and Zip Tie, their first offspring.

According to the zoo, dik-dik are a small African antelope named after the distinctive “dik-dik” sound they make when alarmed.

“Of the four known species, the Little Rock Zoo is home to the Kirk’s dik dik—a species known not only for its petite size but also for its rare social structure,” the zoo said. “Unlike many antelope, Kirk’s dik diks are monogamous and live in lifelong pairs.”

Zoo officials said that its father Zip Tie was born in 2023 and after returning to the zoo, he was joined by Abeba, born in October of 2024.

“Kirk’s dik dik babies are remarkably large at birth—typically around 10% of their mother’s body weight—which can make them tricky to spot at first glance,” the zoo said. “We’re still waiting to confirm the calf’s gender, but we hope to know soon.”
