Dizzy in the Spotlight: Beloved ballpark pup featured on ESPN ahead of ‘Barkansas Dizzys’ promotion
Video: Travs announce that the team will be doing a temporary rebrand as the Barkansas Dizzys
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – One of the coolest features of going to a minor league baseball game, aside from seeing future stars and eating carnival food, is when the team rebrands for a game or week and does themed promotions.
The Arkansas Travelers have taken many different alternate identities in recent years, including as the Mad Mallards and Diamantes de Arkansas this season. One that’s generating attention from baseball fans outside the Natural State, however, is their upcoming homestand as the Barkansas Dizzys.
On Saturday, ESPN’s flagship show “Sportscenter” did a segment spotlighting their Minor League Promotion of the Week with anchors decked out in Dizzys attire; they even showed a picture of the “goodest boy in baseball.”
Barkansas Dizzys week was also spotlighted in a segment on MILB.com highlighting the best promotions throughout the country in June. Additionally, sportscaster Chris Rose of Jomboy Media posted a picture on social media in a Dizzys hat, calling it his Minor League Hat of the Day.
Dizzy, seen rolling around on the field prior to games, is the faithful companion of Greg Johnston the team's VP of Stadium Operations and an employee of the Travs for 50 years. In addition to wearing hats with Dizzy proudly holding a ball in his mouth, the team’s uniforms are themed in throwback Seattle Mariners colors mixed with the color of Dizzy’s fur.
During Barkansas Dizzys week, CHI St. Vincent Field at Dickey-Stephens Park will allow dogs at all six home games in the outfield berm areas. The team will also be giving away pitching Dizzy bobbleheads on Thursday night, and they are throwing him a birthday bash on Saturday.
Dogs and humans in attendance will also get to watch some great baseball on the field, as the Dizzys will be taking on the in-state rival Northwest Arkansas Naturals who are deadlocked with the Travs in a tough Texas League North race.
