U.S. veteran and Tuskegee Airman celebrates 105th birthday in Pine Bluff
PINE BLUFF, Ark. – 105 years of life is worth celebrating not to mention when you're a part of history and pioneer of the African American community.
Thomas Franklin Vaughns was celebrated by the Pine Bluff community for all his years of hard work and dedication he put in to making a difference.
His historic journey began in 1942 at Camp Robinson he soon fought in World War II as a Tuskegee Airman.
During Sunday's birthday celebration it was announced that a scholarship at UAPB would be given out in his name to carry his legacy.
Former President Bill Clinton, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Joseph K Wood all sent a special thank you for his service.
"All of us belong to church and when I go to heaven I want all of my children around me," Vaughn said.
He says his accomplishments wouldn't be possible without God and his family. His daughter Hope Johnson says she's proud to call him dad.
"He is a very humble and modest person and he's a Christian person and he loves people. He is a humanitarian and all he ever wanted to do was serve." Johnson said.
Vaughns received a congressional gold medal, a World War II victory and is in the Arkansas Agriculture Hall of Fame.
Social Historian Elmond Davis was also there to congratulate Vaughn.
"If you have somebody in your family, a church member, somebody that you work with that has made great strides to be a servant, let's find ways to honor them," Davis said.
