Community rallies at Bauxite Depot for back-to-school bash and local business support

BAUXITE, Ark. – At Bauxite Depot on Saturday, it was all fun and games outside of the newly built strip mall as community members came together for a fun time ahead of the school year.

Taylor Slaughter said she came for the smile on her daughter's face while blowing bubbles and getting her face painted with rainbows.

"And we ate some good food and some ice cream,” Slaughter said.

But this back-to-school summer bash also brought on a different meaning for the Whistle Stop Café.

"I put out a post recently that we were slow, and we just kind of needed some community support. And everybody really showed up for us,” owner of the restaurant, Kirstie Hudson, said.

Hudson said starting a business at the Bauxite Depot has its challenges, but leaning on the community here is what keeps her on track.

"We really appreciate everybody that showed up for us, especially recently when we were struggling through the summer,” Hudson said.

From Baggo to ice cream and even temporary tattoos, this back-to-school bash was another reason for the people of Bauxite to show up for one another.

The Bauxite Depot will host community events on the second Saturday of every month.
