Story Summary
Transamerica follows Bree (Felicity Huffman), a successful transgender woman on the cusp of gender confirmation surgery, who discovers she has an adult son she never met. When her estranged son, Toby (Kevin Zegers), a street‑wise teenager living in New York, shows up demanding money, Bree reluctantly embarks on a cross‑country road trip to bring him to her upcoming surgery. Along the way, the pair confront their painful pasts, grapple with identity, and forge an unlikely bond that forces both to confront who they truly are.
Review
Transamerica balances humor and heart with a deft touch, delivering a nuanced portrait of gender transition that feels both intimate and universally resonant. Huffman's performance is a tour de force, blending vulnerability and wit, while Zegers provides a grounded counterpoint as a disaffected teen. The film’s road‑trip structure serves as a metaphor for self‑discovery, and its screenplay—sharp, compassionate, and often unexpectedly funny—avoids melodrama. Though some supporting characters linger in stereotype, the central relationship shines, making the movie a landmark in LGBTQ+ cinema that still feels fresh over two decades later.
