ARDOT reports pothole repair underway after winter storm crosses Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Officials with the Arkansas Department of Transportation said Wednesday that the agency and contractors are utilizing all available resources to repair potholes that have popped up after the winter storms.

Officials said potholes formed due to the freezing-thawing cycle after the Jan. 14 to 19 winter storm crossed the state, followed by the warming weather during the current week. The freezing and thawing causes pavement layers to crack, and then break down under traffic, officials said.

On Thursday morning emergency repairs on Interstate 30 in Saline County led to traffic moving at a crawl as a lane was closed to facilitate repairs. ARDOT officials said additional repairs are underway on Highway 67/167 in Jacksonville.

The Interstate 30 lane was reopened shortly after noon on Thursday, but IDrive Arkansas cameras show traffic through the area is still moving slowly.

The department is working with contractors to expedite these repairs, ARDOT officials said. With the extended rain in the forecast, however, repairs will take longer due to crews waiting for the pavement to dry out, officials said.

ARDOT is asking drivers to slow down and use extreme caution while repairs are underway.

“With the period of extreme cold we experienced, now followed by a period of extreme rain, we are left vulnerable to prime pothole conditions,” ARDOT Assistant Chief Engineer of Maintenance Steve Frisbee said, “We are all frustrated by them, and we all want them fixed. Please be patient as our crews and our contractors work diligently to repair our roads in the wake of this storm.”

ARDOT said it had already spent $8 million to $10 million during the last week’s storm. That money was used for salt, salt brine, equipment and working hours, officials said.
