SoMa 501 receives $10,000 grant to enhance its Main Street Little Rock eclipse watch party
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A $10,000 grant to SoMa 501 will help provide for its April 8 solar eclipse watch party in Little Rock.
The SoMa in the Dark: Path of Totality Eclipse Watch Party will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 8 in Little Rock between 12th and 16th streets. It is part of a series of Main Street events beginning April 5 up to the day of the eclipse.
The $10,000 grant from the Simons Foundation in partnership with Main Street America will be used specifically to support the Astro Market on April 8, an interactive science exhibit in Main Street’s Bernice Garden. In the garden, booths from the science community will provide insight and experiences for eclipse fans.
Included in the market will be The LightSound Project, a machine that tracks the eclipse and changes its tone in accordance with the amount of light available, permitting the blind and vision-impaired to experience the eclipse.
Also on display will be The Citizen Continental-America Telescope Eclipse 2024 Project. The project is made up of volunteers across the country who will track the eclipse with identical telescopes, allowing an extended view of the middle and lower corona.
Other booths include showing how eclipses were viewed in times past, as well as hands-on projects to understand the nature of an eclipse.
SoMa 501 Executive Director says Elizabeth Michael said the Main Street event is for Little Rock residents and visitors alike.
"We are excited to leverage this grant to further enrich the experience for our community during the total eclipse event,” she said. “The 'In the Path of Totality' initiative perfectly aligns with our mission of merging science, art, culture, and community engagement. We hope that our celestial celebration in SoMa serves as a welcoming, inclusive and fun event for all of Little Rock’s residents and visitors alike.”
