North Little Rock kicks off School Breakfast Month, officials say meal is vital for student success
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - March has been designated as School Breakfast Month, and this week was the kick-off for Little Rock and surrounding areas.
Due to the recent uptick in food insecurity across the state, many children are sent to school without a meal.
Mary Lee Dennis, Child Nutrition Director of North Little Rock, said this initiative is vital for a child and gives them the fuel the need to function in school throughout the day.
Dennis said research done by her district revealed that a proper breakfast before school reduces classroom behavioral problems and has been linked to standardized test score improvement and overall classroom success.
She said all meals served meet USDA requirements and are all part of a healthy and balanced diet.
