The family of Shirley Kay Taylor speaking out after a mass shooting at the Mad Butcher Grocery Store in Fordyce took her life

FORDYCE, Ark.- Angela Atchley is one of Shirley Kay Taylor's daughters who is left feeling overwhelmed and confused after a mass shooting at a local grocery store ended her mother's life.

Shirley Kay Taylor was 63 years old; on July 1, she would have turned 64.

"I got the phone call right at lunchtime, about 11:40 or something like that," Angela Atchley said.

A phone call from her son that she will never ever forget.

"He couldn’t get her to answer the phone, and we knew that there had been a shooting, and basically I just dropped everything and went to Fordyce to Mad Butcher," Atchley said.

Atchley said it felt like the longest drive as what ifs rolled through her head.

"I was just praying it wasn't her," Atchley said.

That is when another phone call came through, still not her mom, but her cousin with heartbreaking news.

"My cousin confirmed and ID'd her body," Atchley said. "She was checking out and she was shot and killed."

Atchley's worst nightmare came true, her mom had been forever taken from her.

"She was just a great person she would have done anything for anybody if that man would have stopped and just asked for a little help she would have helped him," Atchley said.

There wasn't a core memory, but attributes that Atchley said she will cheerish and miss in her mom.

"She was very sarcastic, she loved to cook, she was the hardest working woman I ever met in my life, she loved her family and her kids, she always put us first no matter what she never did anything for herself," Atchley said.

The small town of Fordyce stepping in more ways than one, coming together to help victims and their families.

"The love and support is really kind of overwhelming, everything is right now," Atchley said.

A feeling Atchley doesn't know if she will be able to ever get over.

She was getting her groceries at the Mad Butcher to go home and do what she loved to do, cook.

"Usually when you’d walk into her house she was sitting on a stool in her kitchen," Atchley said.
