'It was our life': North Little Rock pastor reacts to church destroyed in fire day before Thanksgiving
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A North Little Rock church caught fire Wednesday morning, leaving its community to deal with disaster the day before Thanksgiving.
According to the North Little Rock Fire Department, it happened just across the Arkansas River bridge near 16th Street. The church, New Jerusalem Apostolic Faith Church, had been there for 24 years, according to Bishop Tony Laster.
North Little Rock Fire Marshall Chief Brent Almon said it appears to have been an accidental fire, but it's so badly damaged, that they will likely never be able to determine the exact cause of it. He added that, according to security camera footage from a nearby resident, the fire burned for nearly two hours before anyone noticed or reported it.
He believes it started around 6 a.m. Wednesday morning before it was reported by a city employee around 8 a.m.
Laster and his family after arriving at the scene, share their devastation about their home church.
"It was our life," Laster said. "God put us here."
He went on to call this a "hurting matter" because of how much it means to his family, along with his church family.
"It's definitely devastating when you have put your heart and soul into trying to do ministry," Tony's wife Ora Laster said. "To lose everything in a blink of an eye, there are no words for it."
There were no injuries reported, according to North Little Rock Fire Marshalls.
Bishop Laster also said church leaders had been talking about rebuilding already, so they hope to start that process as soon as possible.
