City of Little Rock to open emergency shelter Sunday night

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Officials with the City of Little Rock announced Sunday that an overnight emergency shelter at the Dunbar Community Center will open beginning at 6 p.m.

In a release, the city said that the shelter will remain open until 9 a.m. on Monday. It will open again at 6 p.m. Monday and stay open until 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The Dunbar Community Center is located at 1001 W. 16th Street.

Officials said that the shelter is operating with the assistance from The Van along with community organizations and volunteers.

“We have consistently opened our cold-weather shelters when needed to offer refuge to our unsheltered and others in need during freezing temperatures,” Mayor Frank Scott, Jr. said. “We are able to do so through the leadership of our city team members and strong support from community partners like The Van and other organizations and volunteers.”

In a post on social media, The Van founder Aaron Redding clarified their role in the shelter.

"The city of LR is opening an emergency shelter. The Van is ONLY providing support by way of transportation to the shelter each night, and as much as we can when they close each morning. We will be sending supplies and volunteers," the post said. "We are getting people inside. We will start shuttling sometime around 5-6pm. Please know that you must leave the shelter every day."

The Van will pick up individuals in need of transportation to the shelter, to request transportation, call (501) 955-3444.
