Sheriff warns of Calhoun County phone scam

CALHOUN COUNTY, Ark. – The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department is urging caution as a telephone impersonation scam is occurring in the county.

Officials report that the scam has taken in at least two households, and the scammer has contacted 15.

Department officials say the scam begins when a caller says he is Sgt. McFarland from the Calhoun County sheriff and the recipient has not reported for jury duty. The call comes from phone number 870-227-8670.

Because they missed jury duty, the purported sergeant tells the recipient he was a warrant for their arrest. The caller then asks for $500 to have the charge dismissed.

Sheriff officials stated that no department member would ever make a phone call asking about money or a warrant. They encourage anyone receiving this call to hang up and block the caller’s number.

An identical scam was reported in Columbia County in October.
