Arkansas National Guard begins winter weather response

CAMP JOSEPH T. ROBINSON, NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -  The Arkansas National Guard mobilized Thursday for a winter weather response.

Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders mobilized 140 active-duty Arkansas National Guardsmen to staff 28 winter weather response teams. Officials said the teams will assist Arkansas State Police (ASP) by transporting stranded motorists to a safe area until road conditions improve.

Team patrols will begin at noon on Thursday on interstates and highways as guided by ASP. Each team consists of five Guardsmen, two Humvees, plus communications equipment.

Teams are assigned to ASP troop locations across the state. Teams can recover first responder emergency vehicles to a safe area, if possible, but not privately owned vehicles.

Guardsmen will also provide command and control and liaison duties to Joint Operations Centers around the clock.
