LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The first dental school in Arkansas has received its initial accreditation, with plans to welcome its inaugural class this summer.
The Lyon College School of Dental Medicine will take in 80 students in June since receiving accreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation. It will be located in the Riverfront Plaza in the Riverdale neighborhood.
School officials said the seven-story school will feature classrooms, an onsite clinic and provide students with a three-year curriculum incorporating simulation training and direct patient care. The onsite clinic will specialize in services for children, the elderly and people with special needs, officials said.
“Our patient care clinic will be a vital resource for Arkansas, ensuring access to high-quality dental services for thousands of residents each year,” said Dr. Soffe. “With a particular focus on serving vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly and those with special needs, this clinic will also act as an exceptional training ground for our students, preparing them to deliver compassionate care throughout their careers.”
College officials held a groundbreaking for the school in July 2024.
Arkansas state leaders and Little Rock city leaders have shared their congratulations and support. Sen. John Boozman contributed to addressing the shortage of dental professionals in the state with a $15 million federal appropriation to the dental school.
